Airport City makes me a little afraid of flying. It doesn’t force me to place my life in the hands of a pilot that I’ll never see, it doesn’t lift me several thousand feet in the sky without anything to support me; no, Airport City frightens me because I worry that I’ll have to fork out yet another Facebook credit every time my planes are ready to reach for the clouds. To be sure, the last few years have driven home the sad fact that financial loss is a staple of the airline business, but somehow I doubt this is what 6Waves wanted its players to think about when it designed this new social sim.

That’s not to say it doesn’t start out well, even if there’s not much to distinguish Airport City from other social sims aside from its elaborate airport aspects. You place a few houses here, you place a few hamburger joints there, and just to spice things up, you can also place a runway over yonder. If you need help, a stewardess avatar straight out of the upcoming PanAm television series will serve you several tutorial missions. Airport City may shake up the natural order of things by making the city a product of the airport (instead of vice versa), but you won’t be lost here if you’ve played one of the many other similar games on the market.

The differences spring from the airport itself. The homes you build in the city section are meant to house your passengers, who are then used to populate your airline terminal. The businesses, on the other hand, provide the bulk of your revenue. If you have enough passengers, you can use them to board a plane, which will then take flight into the wild blue yonder for anywhere from a couple of minutes to 16 hours. These airplanes also require fuel to run, so sending a plane on a flight requires pulling the plane from a hangar, filling them with passengers and fuel, and then sending it away. Occasionally you’ll receive time-limited buffs (such as ones that increases your flight or business incomes by 200 percent), and you’ll earn a modest multiplier if you harvest enough coins and passengers quickly enough.

The trouble takes off around the fourth level, when you’ll need to buy an expansion just to complete the buildings required by the tutorials. And, like everything else in Airport City, it’s expensive. Unless you’re the god of social sims, you’ll only have enough to buy one 1,000-gold plot of land, and then you’ll need to spend even more to build the actual buildings. If you don’t, you’ll need to fork out around 25 Facebook credits if you want to proceed. Airport City also makes heavy use of the “ask your friends for parts” social mechanic, although you’re never given any warning as to which buildings will require this and which will not until after you’ve built them. By the seventh level, almost every action requires paying real world cash unless you don’t mind waiting for hours or days, even if you just want to refuel your planes.

This rather greedy framework could work, of course, provided there were enough to distinguish Airport City its cousins on the market. Airport City isn’t a bad game at heart; it merely demands a little too much for what amounts to an overly familiar model with a niche gimmick. It runs well, the art design is satisfactory, and the developers have mentioned that players could see missing elements such as sound and music within the next couple of days. You can even receive helpful items via requests from friends or hire them for jobs, but don’t expect even these options to help your progression that much (especially since such requests are sometimes bugged). In the end, you might want to keep flying past this one. You just don’t get enough for the time and thought you invest in Airport City unless you’re willing to throw some serious cash at it.

I have a very simple wish. I don't think I'm asking for all that much. I want Etherlords [Free] to be the vanguard for the death of energy systems in free-to-play RPGs. We've seen a rise in these kinds of games that make game design purists recoil in horror – ruled by automated battle systems that don't always work in favor of the player. But here's Etherlords, which at least has the decency to let the player play as much as they want. Oh, and it's also a puzzle game with battling that's really just incidental to the whole experience.

Etherlords features 3-on-3 combat that is mostly automated, between creatures with different special abilities. Combat is automated but not stupid: characters attack the enemy they're directly facing, or the closest enemy if the enemy in their lane is dead. After every character has made two attacks, it's possible to deploy one of the characters' special abilities, which can do larger amounts of damage, heal, and/or provide other buffs. But it's also possible to switch lanes, which can provide a strategic advantage, but also allow for characters to land on elemental tiles that pop up, increasing the effect of their abilities.

Etherlords 5What's curious about the structure of the whole game is that really, the battling is just there for the world-building puzzles that fuel the advancement of the game. Each world has a rough layout and a mission to form certain quantities or sizes of a land type. The tutorial doesn't make much sense, but the system starts to make sense over time. There's only so many tiles that can be laid down in a world before the failure condition sets in. The battles are just ways to get more matter to lay down tiles and to swap matter tiles in order to craft the perfect match. And since there's no persistent damage between battles, the only thing stopping players from fighting as much as they want to get as much matter as they need is pretty much just one's attention span.

Really, the fights could be replaced with anything. Imagine a basketball game where you play as a player trying to rebuild basketball courts, and you have to sink free throws to get more tiles. That would really not be much different than the loop that Etherlords deploys! Completing the levels does require beating a challenging boss fight, which is much higher of a level than the normal fights, which does encourage using the boosts. That's pretty much it in terms of the importance of the actual battles.

Etherlords 2Performing efficiently or making large formations in the world-building helps gets extra creatures, which is where the monetization starts to roll in. See, upgrading creatures requires fusing them with other creatures to boost their experience. Thus, playing to get other creatures is important. Creatures give smaller returns on experience over time, so it doesn't hurt to level up smaller creatures to serve as feeders for the bigger creatures. Unfortunately, because there's no way to earn experience in battles, this can promote playing with conservative lineups, especially if a powerful lineup is made and groomed early on – it takes conscious work and effort to build up new creatures.

Now, fusing these creatures costs ether, which is earnable by playing the game, but can also be bought. But because there's no energy system restricting play, if you want to just play old worlds over and over again to stockpile it and the creatures necessary to progress at the rate you desire, well, you can do that. And the game doesn't suffer for it. If you want to pay for more ether to do more fusing and to buy more turns, well, that's an option too. And there's the creature booster packs if you want better creatures right away. I'm not going to say that grinding won't take a while, but it's definitely an option here.

And having a free-to-play RPG where that's an option is welcome. Too many of these free-to-play RPGs throw one too many walls in front of the player and their enjoyment of the game. Etherlords is a game that can be enjoyed for hours on end if so desired! And its combat manages to be simple but not stupid. Plus, that puzzle-centric world-building? It's confusing but clever. Undoubtedly, there's plenty of systems to entice the player to spend the money – why make playing the actual game one of them if it isn't necessary? And the game ain't half-bad looking either. As far as free-to-play RPGs go, Etherlords is well worth it for the curious.

Review  :

There's some free to play elements, currencies, an energy system, robots telling you to buy things. It's basically the sort of game the App Store sometimes feels like it's choked with.

Sure, it's all shiny and neatly put together, and it makes you collect stars to show how good you are at it, but we've all done that a million times, and we've all done it with smiles instead of apathy etched onto our faces.

Botch squad

The Bot Squad of the title is a collection of robots you have at your disposal. Some punch other robots, some get punched by towers, and others are inanimate objects that block pathways.

Sometimes you need to snaffle a chunk of your opponent's core, other times you need to make sure they don't get to yours. The levels are small, the choices are minimal, and everything plays out while you have a bit of a snooze.

There's still a lot of trial and error though, especially in the tower defence sections. And every time you need to tweak your setup and retry, you have to spend another lump of your energy.

And when it boils down to it, what little input you do have in those sections is so bland that it's hardly worth playing through them again.

The attack levels play a little better, and there's some light puzzling in figuring out which way to go, but there's no real sense of triumph when you get to the end.

The whole thing just feels like a by-the-numbers iOS game. There's no spark, no flair, and nothing that sets it apart from the raft of other titles that wash up on the App Store every week.

Nothing like a seaside getaway! Too bad you’re not here to soak up the rays. Sunshine Bay puts you in the managerial shoes at a resort where people come to kick back and relax. It’s your job to make sure their basic needs are met, sending them on pleasure cruises and providing shopping centers to turn your piece of oceanfront property into a bustling economical juggernaut!

Sunshine Bay is a serene building sim that only looks complex on the surface. The basic goal is to send visitors out on voyages and use the money you earn to expand your shoreline town. A bigger town, in turn, allows you to build bigger and better boats, creating a feedback loop that (hopefully) ends in a bustling, successful resort.

Click on the icons at the bottom of the screen to add new structures or check your warehouse contents. When passengers arrive or boats need tending to, an alert appears above them on the map. Click, collect any icons that pop out, and then repeat! You should keep as many ships out to sea as your piers can support, so always have one eye on expansion while the other monitors potential passengers.  Much like any simulation game, you’ll also receive missions to complete. They range from building orders to quick voyages out to sea. Quests earn you cash and increase your level ranking, giving you access to more buildings and boats.

There’s a lot of stuff to build in Sunshine Bay. It starts with basic houses, bungalows, villas, and townhouses created to hold guests. You also need to construct port buildings like docks, piers, and terminals. And what’s a seaside getaway without cruises? Build boats to fill your docks, and then keep them constantly running so your visitors are happy and spending money. Then there are basic commercial buildings, industries like power plants and solar generators, and decorations to spruce up the place. No shortage of options, but variety in this case is a very good thing.

There are a good handful of numbers you have to keep track of in Sunshine Bay. Passengers need places to stay, which means more housing units. More houses means more electricity will be needed. Keep track of that balance as you monitor fuel and coins, as well. Coins are your basic currency, spent to buy and upgrade things, but you can also drop some gold to shorten building wait times. Fuel is spent to make voyages, but you can use extra fuel to make ships go faster. All of these can be supplemented by spending real cash in the microtransactions marketplace. Sunshine Bay does a good job pacing itself so you never feel obligated to do so, however.

Review  :

When Table Top Racing [Free] hit the new release charts last week, we were pretty stoked not just by the pedigree surrounding the developers, but also its interesting graphical theme. Now that we've had some time to check it out, it's obvious that Table Top's environments and overall visual flair are pretty top notch. Unfortunately, a relatively generic gameplay outing and its emphasis on auto-acceleration controls keep the game from reaching loftier heights.

The first thing you'll notice with Table Top Racing is its unique visual style. Taking a page from classics such as Micro Machines, Table Top has you racing across giant tables filled with every day items. For example, one theme has you on an Asian-themed restaurant table while another might put you in a Hawaiian luau setting. Not everything is food themed, as others simply place you in a kid's room with wooden blocks setting up the racetrack. Maps are nicely done, inventive (at least for iOS) and look great.

In addition to the fun theme, Table Top also excels in simply executing the basics. The graphics simply look great, with the behind-the-back camera angle doing a great job showcasing the visuals. The game even does a great job of making even the static backdrops come alive as you race around the level. Meanwhile, Table Top runs at an incredibly smooth frame rate, a must for frenetic racing games. Finally, I'm also a fan of the music, even if some of the tunes are heavily "inspired" takes on familiar songs.

Otherwise, Table Top Racing is relatively straight-forward from a gameplay perspective. A robust campaign mode challenges racers to participate in a variety of cups that have players taking part in a variety of races that eventually lead to the proper cup. Race objectives range from standard fare (time trials and place matches) to objective (run into your opponent a set time has elapsed) to the dynamic (such as elimination matches). Hitting objectives or placing high enough earns coins that can be used to purchase and outfit your vehicles, which give you a better chance to succeed. Single race modes and multiplayer round out the selections. While there's a lot to see and do in Table Top Racing, the game doesn't really offer much in terms of innovation.

Controls-wise, Table Top offers the choice of tilt-based controls or a simple left/right button scheme with both options using auto acceleration (and no brakes). Auto-acceleration seems to be the control scheme of choice these days for iOS racing titles and while I think the controls work decently, there's still a certain amount of control lost that can be frustrating. It would have been nice to simply offer it as an alternative, even if it's not the "preferred" way to play.

Meanwhile, there's a few facets of the game that don't feel right. Players aren't allowed to upgrade their vehicles in their own way; each vehicle has a set upgrade path and you'll be spending coin on the next upgrade. If you don't like the attribute it's improving, all you can hope for is that the next stat in the queue is your choice. For that matter, the tuning in regards to earning coins, upgrades, and being able to advance in the campaign is a little too heavy on the coins, offering too much of an emphasis on IAPs.

In the crowded iOS racing genre, there's a growing collection of decent racing titles that either focus on killer visuals or innovative gameplay (with the best succeeding in both). Table Top Racing falls in the former category with a fun visual style that does a good job eliciting feelings of nostalgia. Whether that's enough to differentiate itself from the pack is a matter of opinion, but as far as racing titles go you can do a lot worse.
