The game loads. A comic book inspired cut scene begins. A voice-over starts. From the moment you first step into Gangster City you know this isn’t just another Facebook game. It’s a story. It’s an adventure. It’s something we’ve never seen before – a Facebook game with a compelling narrative. Playfish games have taken the Facebook RPG structure popularized by Mafia Wars and turned it on its head, and we’re loving every second of it.

Gangster City is a tale of classic vigilante justice against the mob. If you’re a fan of Mack Bolan: Executioner or The Punisher, you’re going to feel right at home in Gangster City. Unlike other mafia-themed games on Facebook, your goal here isn’t to be a boss – it’s to bring one down.

A classic tale of mafia-opposed vigilantism wouldn’t be complete without the death of a family member to fuel the fires of revenge, and Gangster City follows the formula perfectly. Your father (god rest his soul) got mixed up with the mob and ended up in an early grave due to that dirty business. But dirty or not, pops was a good man. It’s up to you to get your revenge – and that’s where the story begins.

If movies and TV have taught us anything, it’s that the only way to take down the mob is from the inside out. You’re going to have to get your hands dirty. Infiltrate the Cosa Nostra. Become one of them. This means completing tasks, doing bad deeds, and working your way up the ranks. To do this you’ll engage in a number of activities that will feel familiar to any Mafia Wars veteran – but don’t think that means this is just another clone. Gangster City refines and reinvents the genre at every possible turn.

Most games of this sort are cold and clinical menu-based affairs. Sure you might be fighting a dragon, tackling a fashion runway or whacking a mafia don – but no matter what storyline is placed on top of the format, the dramatic elements of this genre have never seemed to click. Gangster City is different. There’s a story here that manages to compliment the gameplay. You don’t just select missions from a menu – you get them from relevant characters. You don’t just whack a mobster because he’s there – you do it because it helps cement your place in the family so you can exact your revenge. But story elements aren’t the only new twist that Gangster City brings to the table. These mobsters have a steamer trunk full of tricks they’re bringing to the table.

Each mission blends the two elements of Facebook RPG’s that are usually kept separate – the task itself, and multiplayer battles. To access the task you’ll still need to meet certain requirements. Have X amount of energy, make sure you have weapon Y – that sort of thing. But once the task is accessed you’ll need to be able to defeat your opponent based on your attack and defense stats. Blending these two elements was a stroke of genius – it adds a level of strategy to the mission-based portion of the game while at the same time presenting something that’s totally familiar. And since you’ll only be allowed to equip a certain number of weapons, you’ll need to pick and choose wisely depending on the task at hand.

The game wouldn’t be complete without some form of real multiplayer battle, and again, Gangster City makes some smart choices in game design. In this case, you’ll be robbing different players based on the in-game properties they own. What’s unique here is that you’ll be able to purchase different lists of players to rob. You can grab a free list with random players on it, pay for the Rich List and hit up players with a good bankroll, or buy the Weak List and prey on some easy targets. It adds a little something to a multiplayer formula that usually presents little more than a random list of other players to do battle with.

Rather than relying on a separate energy bar for player interaction, the multiplayer element of the game shares the same energy bar as the mission mode. This means you’ll need to ration out your energy wisely before jumping into an entanglement. It’s little changes like this – sensible changes to a well-tread formula – that make Gangster City such a success.

Presentation here is outstanding as well. Each job you do comes with its own little 3 second cut scene. Stealing a car at the behest of your bosses? Get treated to a hotwiring cut scene. Getting into a firefight? Watch the bullets fly, complete with comic book onomatopoeias. The presentation in Gangster City isn’t just exceptional because of the polished visuals, but because of the attention to detail. Every moment of the game feels unique. Each little facet has its own art or animations. No two moments ever feel truly alike, and even if they do, it’s lightyears from the menu-based cookie cutter gameplay that we’ve come to expect from the genre.

There’s no two ways around it; Gangster City is the next evolution in Facebook gaming. It revisits a popular genre, keeps everything that was great intact, and repackages the rest in a way that feels fresh and unique. Gangster City takes the traditional Facebook RPG and turns it up to 11. It’s everything you loved about Mafia Wars put in a blender with unicorn dust and pixie wings. It’s magical. Evolving a genre is a major challenge; usually it happens in bits and pieces over time with no one game able to claim they single-handedly reinvented the genre. Gangster City is more than just a great Facebook game – it raises the bar for every Facebook RPG that follows it.

Zombie Outbreak Simulator a sandbox type of application that was first launched for iPhone and iPad is now available on Android. This game is developed by Binary Space games and has been downloaded 300,000 times and over a million plays online.

It has been praised by Gizmodo, Games Radar and many other tech websites for its highly engaging gameplay. But we are talking about the android version of it now so I will give you my impressions on this particular version. While the game mechanics remains the same, I cannot say the same for the gameplay experience as it crashes quite a lot when I play it on Tegra based tablet. And in many instances the civilian just bugs out around helicopters.

The game is free to download and play but is very limited and if you want to fully experience the game, you will have to purchase features such as soldiers, weapons and choppers.

While it is clear to me that it needs more polishing which I trust the developers are looking into it now, I still recommend Zombie Outbreak Simulator to Android users especially to those who are fans of the Zombie genre. I think that the idea of using real Google maps as the settings of an apocalypse is just really genius

Do you want to be a star, girl? Of course you do – everybody does and even though in real life it’s not as easy, in our beloved mobile games things are a lot different. Star Girl on Android, for example, is one of the games that makes your dreams come true and help you become an A list celebrity as soon as you say fashion.

But is your raise to stardom as fun and rewarding in Star Girl as it is in real life? Well… check out this review and you’ll find out!

You start, just like all the ladies out there, as a little nobody with a dream of glory and you are ready to do anything in order to get there. And by anything, I really mean it – even if it means making boyfriends just to get their gifts, chatting with strangers on your mobile phone and playing nice with all those no good celebrities out there. But as long as your purpose is met, it’s all great.

The biggest problem of Star Girl (at least with the version that we reviewed) is that it has no real tutorial and as soon as you start playing you’ll be a little lost. “Do this” and “do that” then “tap here” and you’re done! It’s pretty fast and pretty soon you’ll see that you don’t really know “what does this button do”. Fortunately, you can’t break anything, so you will soon learn your way in the city where your stardom awaits. And it’s maybe even a bit more fun than simply being told what to do (and forgetting it all in the next second).

The basic idea of the game is to slowly build your career(s) and date famous people. Of course, you are not the lucky one to score the celebrity from starters, so you’ll have to start low with that crappy IT guy and work up the ladder until you get your super-celebrity.

Meanwhile, you can buy clothes to become more appealing to the opposite gender (and these clothes must be all designer wear because they are REALLY expensive), flirt with guys on the phone and even go on the Star Chat to have some fun.

Although basically not extremely rewarding in-game (except for the fact that you can stumble upon a celebrity and make them your boyfriends faster), the Star Chat is really fun for a while because it lets you use your wild imagination to chat with a Justin Bieber clone (named Jarvin Braver in the game) or with Bill Smythe and so on… And their engine of generating responses is pretty advanced and I was really surprised to see that the discussions with them can go VERY far. Just try it for fun, you won’t regret it!

Of course, you won’t become famous just by chatting and dating other famous people – it’s not like in real life! In Star Girl you also have to work hard to get up there and there are three career paths you can choose (at the same time, fortunately): you can be a singer, a model and an actress and each of the career paths come with “jobs” that take time to complete. Every job that you complete rewards you with money and XP and also fills up a meter that gets you one step closer to an award. Right now, the awards are nothing more than trophies to have and to brag with, but hopefully in the near future an update will make them a lot more interesting and rewarding.

Apart from that, you can dress up and change your appearance, you can add friends and visit their houses (to see who are they dating, of course) and play mini-games, everything while completing the must have quests and getting more and more rewards.

Of course, it’s not all perfect about Star Girl on Android, even though the game is extremely fun overall. However, I think that it’s translated and English is not its basic language as there are some strange lines of text in the game and some are very misleading. For example, I have a mission that wants me to “Go to the fasion store and by 2 Dress” and buying dresses didn’t really help. So I am not sure what they want me to buy (maybe a skirt – I will try that until I have the money), which is pretty frustrating. But this is just a small problem compared to the overall complexity of the game and hopefully these translation errors and grammar problems will be fixed in time – after all, I am not a native English speaker either and I make errors too, so I can understand that and get past it since it’s not game breaking.

Overall, Star Girl on Android is a fantastic app for the celebrity wannabees out there. There are so many things you can do in the game that you can even forget that your main goal is to become a celebrity and even though the males in the game are used mostly for getting gifts from and then giving them the boot, it still is a really fun game. There are even some promised updates coming soon (like wedding options!) which will make Star Girl even more interesting in the future, so it’s definitely one title to keep an eye on and play especially since it’s free!

Airport City makes me a little afraid of flying. It doesn’t force me to place my life in the hands of a pilot that I’ll never see, it doesn’t lift me several thousand feet in the sky without anything to support me; no, Airport City frightens me because I worry that I’ll have to fork out yet another Facebook credit every time my planes are ready to reach for the clouds. To be sure, the last few years have driven home the sad fact that financial loss is a staple of the airline business, but somehow I doubt this is what 6Waves wanted its players to think about when it designed this new social sim.

That’s not to say it doesn’t start out well, even if there’s not much to distinguish Airport City from other social sims aside from its elaborate airport aspects. You place a few houses here, you place a few hamburger joints there, and just to spice things up, you can also place a runway over yonder. If you need help, a stewardess avatar straight out of the upcoming PanAm television series will serve you several tutorial missions. Airport City may shake up the natural order of things by making the city a product of the airport (instead of vice versa), but you won’t be lost here if you’ve played one of the many other similar games on the market.

The differences spring from the airport itself. The homes you build in the city section are meant to house your passengers, who are then used to populate your airline terminal. The businesses, on the other hand, provide the bulk of your revenue. If you have enough passengers, you can use them to board a plane, which will then take flight into the wild blue yonder for anywhere from a couple of minutes to 16 hours. These airplanes also require fuel to run, so sending a plane on a flight requires pulling the plane from a hangar, filling them with passengers and fuel, and then sending it away. Occasionally you’ll receive time-limited buffs (such as ones that increases your flight or business incomes by 200 percent), and you’ll earn a modest multiplier if you harvest enough coins and passengers quickly enough.

The trouble takes off around the fourth level, when you’ll need to buy an expansion just to complete the buildings required by the tutorials. And, like everything else in Airport City, it’s expensive. Unless you’re the god of social sims, you’ll only have enough to buy one 1,000-gold plot of land, and then you’ll need to spend even more to build the actual buildings. If you don’t, you’ll need to fork out around 25 Facebook credits if you want to proceed. Airport City also makes heavy use of the “ask your friends for parts” social mechanic, although you’re never given any warning as to which buildings will require this and which will not until after you’ve built them. By the seventh level, almost every action requires paying real world cash unless you don’t mind waiting for hours or days, even if you just want to refuel your planes.

This rather greedy framework could work, of course, provided there were enough to distinguish Airport City its cousins on the market. Airport City isn’t a bad game at heart; it merely demands a little too much for what amounts to an overly familiar model with a niche gimmick. It runs well, the art design is satisfactory, and the developers have mentioned that players could see missing elements such as sound and music within the next couple of days. You can even receive helpful items via requests from friends or hire them for jobs, but don’t expect even these options to help your progression that much (especially since such requests are sometimes bugged). In the end, you might want to keep flying past this one. You just don’t get enough for the time and thought you invest in Airport City unless you’re willing to throw some serious cash at it.

I have a very simple wish. I don't think I'm asking for all that much. I want Etherlords [Free] to be the vanguard for the death of energy systems in free-to-play RPGs. We've seen a rise in these kinds of games that make game design purists recoil in horror – ruled by automated battle systems that don't always work in favor of the player. But here's Etherlords, which at least has the decency to let the player play as much as they want. Oh, and it's also a puzzle game with battling that's really just incidental to the whole experience.

Etherlords features 3-on-3 combat that is mostly automated, between creatures with different special abilities. Combat is automated but not stupid: characters attack the enemy they're directly facing, or the closest enemy if the enemy in their lane is dead. After every character has made two attacks, it's possible to deploy one of the characters' special abilities, which can do larger amounts of damage, heal, and/or provide other buffs. But it's also possible to switch lanes, which can provide a strategic advantage, but also allow for characters to land on elemental tiles that pop up, increasing the effect of their abilities.

Etherlords 5What's curious about the structure of the whole game is that really, the battling is just there for the world-building puzzles that fuel the advancement of the game. Each world has a rough layout and a mission to form certain quantities or sizes of a land type. The tutorial doesn't make much sense, but the system starts to make sense over time. There's only so many tiles that can be laid down in a world before the failure condition sets in. The battles are just ways to get more matter to lay down tiles and to swap matter tiles in order to craft the perfect match. And since there's no persistent damage between battles, the only thing stopping players from fighting as much as they want to get as much matter as they need is pretty much just one's attention span.

Really, the fights could be replaced with anything. Imagine a basketball game where you play as a player trying to rebuild basketball courts, and you have to sink free throws to get more tiles. That would really not be much different than the loop that Etherlords deploys! Completing the levels does require beating a challenging boss fight, which is much higher of a level than the normal fights, which does encourage using the boosts. That's pretty much it in terms of the importance of the actual battles.

Etherlords 2Performing efficiently or making large formations in the world-building helps gets extra creatures, which is where the monetization starts to roll in. See, upgrading creatures requires fusing them with other creatures to boost their experience. Thus, playing to get other creatures is important. Creatures give smaller returns on experience over time, so it doesn't hurt to level up smaller creatures to serve as feeders for the bigger creatures. Unfortunately, because there's no way to earn experience in battles, this can promote playing with conservative lineups, especially if a powerful lineup is made and groomed early on – it takes conscious work and effort to build up new creatures.

Now, fusing these creatures costs ether, which is earnable by playing the game, but can also be bought. But because there's no energy system restricting play, if you want to just play old worlds over and over again to stockpile it and the creatures necessary to progress at the rate you desire, well, you can do that. And the game doesn't suffer for it. If you want to pay for more ether to do more fusing and to buy more turns, well, that's an option too. And there's the creature booster packs if you want better creatures right away. I'm not going to say that grinding won't take a while, but it's definitely an option here.

And having a free-to-play RPG where that's an option is welcome. Too many of these free-to-play RPGs throw one too many walls in front of the player and their enjoyment of the game. Etherlords is a game that can be enjoyed for hours on end if so desired! And its combat manages to be simple but not stupid. Plus, that puzzle-centric world-building? It's confusing but clever. Undoubtedly, there's plenty of systems to entice the player to spend the money – why make playing the actual game one of them if it isn't necessary? And the game ain't half-bad looking either. As far as free-to-play RPGs go, Etherlords is well worth it for the curious.

Design

Well, Pou is kinda funny-looking, brown, triangular, big-eyed baby alien. I guess that would be the best description in short. Still, one of the greatest aspects of this game is the fact that you can use clothing, accessories, or even makeup, in order to get your own, fully customized pet alien, active at your android 24/7. At the start of the game, Pou does not have a gender, and another nice thing about this game is that you actually choose it yourself. Your Pou will become “a boy or a girl” later on in the game, and the gender will be decided by your choice of Pou’s clothing and similar actions. The entire game has simple, but very clean, neat and attractive design. That goes for all items, backgrounds, as well as for Pou itself.

Gameplay

Game is surprisingly entertaining and easy to play at the same time. All interaction between Pou and the environment is performed using drag and drop system, which works with perfect precision and great responsiveness. As we’ve already said, Pou is just like any other pet. It gets hungry, lonely, bored, dirty, angry, tired, and that’s only some of different moods and states your android pet will get into. So you’re supposed to feed it, clean it, give it medication. There is even the option to have a “conversation” with Pou. It is not much of a conversation – you talk, and Pou repeats. Quite simple feature, but kids will probably find it very amusing. Entertaining Pou is the most important aspect of the game. It basically comes down to various mini-games you can play, and by playing these games, you win coins that you can use to buy different backgrounds, clothing and other items that will help you fully-customize your gaming experience. Some of games are really funny and captivating, although most of them are not very original or authentic.

Coins

If you’re in a hurry and need more coins, you can buy them (surprise, surprise). Still, you could earn significant amount of coins by playing, without spending real-life cash. On the other hand, some items will most likely remain out of reach, unless you decide to pay.

As with most other games, it all comes to the choice: what do you value more – your money, or your time. And of course, how addicted you are to the game. And let me tell you, you can get pretty addicted. Still, this game is not for everyone’s taste (but then again, which game is?)

There's some free to play elements, currencies, an energy system, robots telling you to buy things. It's basically the sort of game the App Store sometimes feels like it's choked with.

Sure, it's all shiny and neatly put together, and it makes you collect stars to show how good you are at it, but we've all done that a million times, and we've all done it with smiles instead of apathy etched onto our faces.

Botch squad

The Bot Squad of the title is a collection of robots you have at your disposal. Some punch other robots, some get punched by towers, and others are inanimate objects that block pathways.

Sometimes you need to snaffle a chunk of your opponent's core, other times you need to make sure they don't get to yours. The levels are small, the choices are minimal, and everything plays out while you have a bit of a snooze.

There's still a lot of trial and error though, especially in the tower defence sections. And every time you need to tweak your setup and retry, you have to spend another lump of your energy.

And when it boils down to it, what little input you do have in those sections is so bland that it's hardly worth playing through them again.

The attack levels play a little better, and there's some light puzzling in figuring out which way to go, but there's no real sense of triumph when you get to the end.

The whole thing just feels like a by-the-numbers iOS game. There's no spark, no flair, and nothing that sets it apart from the raft of other titles that wash up on the App Store every week.

Nothing like a seaside getaway! Too bad you’re not here to soak up the rays. Sunshine Bay puts you in the managerial shoes at a resort where people come to kick back and relax. It’s your job to make sure their basic needs are met, sending them on pleasure cruises and providing shopping centers to turn your piece of oceanfront property into a bustling economical juggernaut!

Sunshine Bay is a serene building sim that only looks complex on the surface. The basic goal is to send visitors out on voyages and use the money you earn to expand your shoreline town. A bigger town, in turn, allows you to build bigger and better boats, creating a feedback loop that (hopefully) ends in a bustling, successful resort.

Click on the icons at the bottom of the screen to add new structures or check your warehouse contents. When passengers arrive or boats need tending to, an alert appears above them on the map. Click, collect any icons that pop out, and then repeat! You should keep as many ships out to sea as your piers can support, so always have one eye on expansion while the other monitors potential passengers.  Much like any simulation game, you’ll also receive missions to complete. They range from building orders to quick voyages out to sea. Quests earn you cash and increase your level ranking, giving you access to more buildings and boats.

There’s a lot of stuff to build in Sunshine Bay. It starts with basic houses, bungalows, villas, and townhouses created to hold guests. You also need to construct port buildings like docks, piers, and terminals. And what’s a seaside getaway without cruises? Build boats to fill your docks, and then keep them constantly running so your visitors are happy and spending money. Then there are basic commercial buildings, industries like power plants and solar generators, and decorations to spruce up the place. No shortage of options, but variety in this case is a very good thing.

There are a good handful of numbers you have to keep track of in Sunshine Bay. Passengers need places to stay, which means more housing units. More houses means more electricity will be needed. Keep track of that balance as you monitor fuel and coins, as well. Coins are your basic currency, spent to buy and upgrade things, but you can also drop some gold to shorten building wait times. Fuel is spent to make voyages, but you can use extra fuel to make ships go faster. All of these can be supplemented by spending real cash in the microtransactions marketplace. Sunshine Bay does a good job pacing itself so you never feel obligated to do so, however.
